A project manager helps a roofing crew prepare to begin installing underlayment

A leaking roof can be stressful, costly, and disruptive—especially if the problem isn’t caught early. Understanding the most common causes of roof leaks can help homeowners spot issues sooner and take action before serious damage occurs. Here are the top five reasons your roof could be leaking.

1. Damaged or Missing Shingles
Shingles are your roof’s first line of defense against the elements. High winds, heavy rain, hail, and aging materials can cause shingles to crack, curl, or fall off entirely. When this happens, water can easily seep into the underlying layers and make its way into your home.

2. Faulty Flashing
Flashing is the metal material installed around roof penetrations such as chimneys, skylights, vents, and valleys. If flashing is improperly installed, rusted, or cracked, it can create gaps where water enters. Flashing issues are one of the most common—and often overlooked—sources of roof leaks.

3. Clogged or Damaged Gutters
Gutters play a crucial role in directing water away from your roof and foundation. When they become clogged with leaves, debris, or ice, water can back up and seep under the roof edge. Over time, this can lead to leaks, wood rot, and interior water damage.

4. Cracked Vent Boots or Seals
Roof vents are sealed with rubber or plastic boots that can deteriorate over time due to sun exposure and weather changes. Once these seals crack or break, water can easily enter around the vent pipes, causing leaks that may go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.

5. Aging Roof Materials
Even the best roofs don’t last forever. As roofing materials age, they lose their ability to repel water effectively. Small cracks, weakened underlayment, and general wear can all contribute to leaks, especially during heavy storms.

Regular inspections and prompt repairs are key to preventing roof leaks. If you notice water stains, mold, or dripping, it’s best to consult a professional roofer before the problem worsens.
